Based on principles of technique from Martha Graham, Humphrey and Weidman, and other Denishawn dancers, this modern dance course explores fall-and-recovery technique to create movement that expresses intent through music. Modern dance was developed as a reaction to the rigidity of classical ballet, and it rejects the drive for perfection in shape and form. It is therefore an easier entry-point into dance techniques, though it is by no means a simple discipline.
Participants will move with music and intent, learning some standard repertoire skills as well as working through improvisation and choreographic technique. Depending on the willingness and skill level of the participant, they may also engage in higher-intensity acrobatic technique or partnering. No experience is necessary to start, but experience in dance or other performing arts is welcomed and differing experience levels will be accommodated. Comfortable clothing and bare feet are the only required dress, though dancers are encouraged to bring along dancer's knee pads as well for floor work and water to drink to remain hydrated.
